***WARNING: STRONG AND EXPLICIT LANGUAGE IS USED ON THIS SHOW***

On this episode, we feature a group discussion with nine guys, all of whom were at WSF’s Sheep Show last week.

We recorded this episode in one of our hotel rooms just before attending the Grand Finale Banquet so, the audio quality is not as high as we would normally produce, but given the size of the group and the microphone system required it’s the best we could do. It's not bad, but it's not up to our usual standard.

In addition, this podcast contains some strong and explicit language, so if you often listen to podcasts in the vehicle with your kids, this is not one to do so with. We do apologize if anyone takes offense to the language used, but the topics covered are ones we are all, very obviously, passionate about. At least in some circles (like ours), when you get a group of guys together that feel strongly about a given subject, the language is going to get a little colorful at times. That said, the topics covered are very interesting given the very eclectic group of guys huddled around the microphone.

The group includes a mix of people from all over Canada and the US, some with lots of hunting experience, others with minimal hunting experience and each with different connections to hunting. We dive into all that and more.

What does hunting mean to us on an individual level? How does the act of killing an animal actually feel? How does both the hunting and non-hunting community communicate the reasons we hunt? How do the complexities of conservation fit into the modern media landscape? It's a wide-ranging conversation, but one that is quite interesting given the people involved.

On that note specifically, the guys present are:

  • Joshua Skenes, a relatively new hunter and world-renowned chef that owns one of the Top 50 restaurants in the world.
  • Matt Martinez, a long-time hunter and modern renaissance man with experience and success in the business, art and photography world.
  • Mike Pedersen and Kelly Molnar from The Rookie Hunter Podcast.
  • Nolan Osborne, mountain hunting guide, JOMH Assistant Editor and our staff millennial.
  • Peter Gutsche, a BC resident who’s been hunting his entire life that’s deeply passionate about mountain hunting and conservation.
  • Matt Comment, past guest, East Coaster, experienced mountain hunter and passionate conservationist.
  • Connor Gabbott, past guest, chef, photographer and dedicated mountain hunter.

On this episode, Adam is joined by Bill Roden. Bill is a branding executive in the outdoors industry and a very passionate outdoorsman in the broadest sense possible. He is also an active member of a whole host of conservation and environmental organizations, including the BHA, RMEF, Pheasants Forever, TRCP, Trout Unlimited, QDMA, and the Sierra Club.

Adam and Bill dive into a broad and lengthy discussion that surrounds the state of marketing, advertising and social media in the hunting industry. How are we representing our community on both an individual and brand level? How do the images and messages we put forth, both literal and figurative, impact our future?

This is obviously a subject we’ve covered before, but Bill has spent his entire career immersed in the marketing and advertising business, so he brings a unique and experienced perspective to bear on this topic. If hunting is to remain relevant in the modern media landscape, this is a topic we cannot ignore. Enjoy!

On this episode, Adam is joined by Luke Boswell and Ryan Holm from MYSTERY RANCH. Both these guys have been on the show previously, but on this episode we dive into the weeds on pack design and pack construction.

From hard goods to soft goods and how every single decision impacts field functionality, you will be amazed at the level of detail applied throughout the pack design and building process.

Mystery Ranch has recently launched a number of new packs and patterns, and Luke, Ryan, and Adam also review these new designs and partnerships. If you like to geek out on gear, this is the episode for you!

On this episode, Adam is joined by Chef Eduardo Garcia. Many of you may have heard of Eduardo via his film, CHARGED: THE EDUARDO GARCIA STORY, released late last year. It is a story of survival, relationships and living life to the fullest. If you have not seen this film, it is a true must watch.

Eduardo’s story is interesting to say the least. After being electrocuted by 2400 volts of electricity in a freak hunting accident, Eduardo’s life was forever changed. The film is, outwardly, about that unfortunate event but more importantly covers Eduardo's life journey before and after the accident. From his paradoxically challenging and charmed life leading up to the accident to the unbelievably difficult and inspirational recovery process he had to endure, this is a story that will impact you.

Adam and Eduardo dive into a host of sub-themes covered in the film, and there is no question that this podcast is a heavy and deep exploration of what it means to experience life in the fullest sense, regardless of the cards you are dealt.

Eduardo is also a very avid hunter and outdoorsman in general, on top of being a highly accomplished chef and businessman. He has worked with some of the brands we work with, like Mystery Ranch and Schnee’s, for quite some time. He is a Brand Ambassador for Mystery Ranch and, in my opinion, they couldn’t have asked for a better ambassador to represent their company and our community.
